Our Labyrinth | | The Chartres Labyrinth | The Cretan Labyrinth |
We have built a Cretan style Labyrinth on our property! The pictures on this page show the progress of our first labyrinth. We look forward to sharing the fruits of this project with our guests, and with people seeking a rewarding journey, wherever they may be from. The pattern of the labyrinth appears over 3500 years ago in many cultures around the world. Various forms of labyrinth have meant many things over the centuries to different cultures. The most common pattern of ancient labyrinth is the seven-circuit, or Cretan labyrinth, so called because of the pattern found on coins from the island of Crete, as well as ties to the Greek legend of Theseus and the Minotaur in the “labyrinth” of Crete. While the ‘labyrinth’ in Greek legend must have been a maze, true labyrinths are not mazes. Unlike a maze, the labyrinth is unicursal, having a single path leading to the center with no loops, cul-de-sacs or forks. Today, the labyrinth has become a tool for modern “pilgrims” to enhance prayer, meditation, contemplation, and as a way to seek personal growth. We have decided to build a labyrinth on our property to offer travelers the opportunity walk the pattern of the labyrinth and discover what it means to them personally. Our first labyrinth has been laid out on our roof and traced in blue paint. For more about the history and meaning of the labyrinth, please visit some of the links below our construction pictures.
